The Workings of a Rotary Screw Air Compressor

Developed in the 1930’s, the twin elements of the compressor system include the male and female parts that rotate in opposite directions.As air begins to occupy the space between the rotors and, as they rotate, the space between them and the surrounding housing decrease. The compressing of the air into a smaller space, and then the pitch of the screw, the length and the shape of the exit port, together, determine the pressure ratio. Aside from that there are no variables that can cause unbalance which will in turn allow a screw compressor to operate at high speeds while combining a large flow rate with small exterior dimension.

Oil Injected Rotary Screw Compressor

In oil-injected rotary screw air compressors, oil is injected into the compression chamber to lubricate and cool the moving parts of the compressor. Generally oil is the liquid agent because of its ability to lubricate and seal to minimize leaks while also cooling the air being compressed. Then the oil is usually separated and passes through a filter and cooler before it is cycled back into the process again. Sometimes the compressed air is still hot and many times is run through the cooler depending on the end usage.
